Chapter Fifteen

Tatum

TONIGHT WOULD HAVE been the perfect night to wear that red dress I didn’t buy. I still needed to do my wardrobe update. Soon, I promised myself. For now, the frayed jean skirt, my open shouldered blouse and the knee-high boots I loved would have to do.

I sprayed some hairspray in my hair and then gave it a good crunching. I added a shade darker than normal lipstick and spritzed on a little extra perfume. I wasn’t going out to pick up a guy, but I wouldn’t be sad if I got noticed by a few. I had to remember that as far as the world knew, I was a taken woman. I was in a relationship with a hot guy fresh on the heels of my breakup with my serious boyfriend.

I grabbed my purse and rushed out the door before my Uber left. Piper and I were finally going out. It had been forever. I waited outside the bar we were meeting at for her to show up. I wasn’t going in alone. It was strange to be going out as a single woman. It was the first time in years. I felt like I had a flashing light over my head alerting the world to my newly single status.

Once she showed up, we found a tiny table that was just big enough for our elbows and drinks. No chairs. Just a table. “How’s the book coming along?” I asked her.

She blew out a breath. “I was cruising, but I hit a wall.”

“Writer’s block?”

“Like so much worse, but yet better.”

“Better?”

She sipped her Moscow Mule. “I have been kicking ass on this. I really feel like I’m in the story. I think it’s going to be my best book yet.”

“Then what’s the problem?”

“I feel like I’m at a crossroads. I want to make the right choice for the story. I’m just not sure what it is.”

“Do you want me to review it? Give you some insight?” I often did that for her. I didn’t act as editor, but as a friend giving advice. I loved reading when I wasn’t reading to find every critical mistake. I liked getting lost in the story and not having to worry about the details.

“No. Not yet. I want to at least get the story told.”

“Hopefully a night out will get those creative juices flowing. I feel like I haven’t seen you or talked to you in forever.”

“I’m sorry. I just had to put my head down and get it all out while it was fresh in my head.”

“I get it. I know how you get.”

“How’s the fake romance?”

I laughed at her term. “It’s good. We went to a dinner at my boss’s boss’s house the other night. How crazy is that? The housewife that has the hots for Cooper is the publishing company’s owner’s wife.”

She shook her head. “That’s a whole lot of degrees.”

“Yeah, it was strange, but fun.”

“So Cooper got to use you to run interference,” she said with a laugh.

“I suppose he did.
